Ride to Read Press Release:

The scenic byways of Marquette County were featured in routes pedaled by cyclists in the Portage Kiwanis Club’s “Ride to Read” bike ride this past August. Over 100 visiting cyclists from places as varied as Florida and Milwaukee join local bicyclists in riding loops of 15, 30, 45 and 62 miles through Columbia, Marquette and Green Lake counties. Many riders choose to ride the full 62 miles. (100 kilometers) 100 km is a standard ride for avid cyclists. The route, which began in Portage, took riders across County hwy CM and Barry Road thru the Amish settlement, up thru Dalton and Kingston to Lake Puckaway and looped back at Grand River Marsh, then down County E to Portage. Rest stops with beverages, snacks and toilet facilities were located at the Amish Buggy Shop and the park in Downtown Kingston. Riders doing the 30 and 45 mile Segments were routed down Kiefer Road to E. Many riders found it impossible to pass the Amish Bakery on Kiefer Rd and could be seen, in their garb, waiting to buy baked goods. The ride, which was a first for the Kiwanians, was formerly sponsored by the local “Best Friends”(formerly Boys & Girls Club) which disbanded in 2010. 100% of funds raised goes to support programs focused on encouraging literacy in children. In 2017, as one part of this effort, Kiwanians distributed over 2500 quality books to children absolutely free. They will be passing out free books to children attending the Pardeevile, Wisconsin 4th of July Parade, Portage Canal Day's Parade, and Culver's Kids Day. Enthused by the success of the previous "Ride to Read" events, the Kiwanians will again sponsor the ride which will be on August 10, 2019. The ride will feature similar routes and venues.
